When articles about Budapest pop up in the press, or photos of the city appear on Instagram, it’s usually to document the relaxed lifestyle of young locals and the debauched antics of its stag-happy tourists. For sure the city is great for those in their 20s, but it also has a lot to offer older travelers, loved-up couples, and history and culture mavens. We’re proud to say that Budapest truly is a city for anyone and everyone, so come see it for yourself.
Partypest - Pubs, clubs and lots of outdoor drinking So yeh, as we said, Budapest certainly has a well-earned reputation for hedonism. Ruin pubs - unique to the city and basically giant bar and art spaces brought to life in the shells of disused buildings - lead the charge. But that’s not all we’ve got to offer. Awesome boat parties by the river several times a week, there are more parks than you’ll ever get the chance to pregame in, beer bikes offer a lazy refreshments-included way to see the sights, and of course, there’s Sparty - a last days of Rome-esque rave held weekly in one of the city’s most beautiful Ottoman-era bath spas. Refined Travellers - Great restaurants, coffee and chill spots We don’t want to call you old - so we’re going to say ‘refined’ instead. You like a good drink as much as anyone, but you’d rather be able to pull yourself out of bed before lunch time, without your head feeling like a brick and actually be able to go and do something with your day. For you, Budapest had some world-class restaurants, with local favorites, international imports as well as all sorts of wonderful hybrids and infusions. See for yourself at places like Vintage Garden, STIKA and KIOSK. Oh, and coffee, we do that really well as well. Tamp & Pull or Espresso Embassy are two of the best. And finally, when it comes to chill at the end of a long day, we recommend you do it somewhere with a view - like 360 Bar, right in the heart of the city. A city for romantics If you’ve come to Budapest for a loved-up weekend, you’re not going to be disappointed - they don’t call Budapest ‘the Paris of the East’ for nothing. Walk the banks of the river at sunset and soak up the beautiful views and atmosphere - and you’ll understand why. And, aside from the top quality restaurants we’ve already mentioned, we definitely recommend you sink a bottle or two of Hungary’s renowned local wines, or head over to a bakery like Gerbeaud or Szamos and try Hungary’s ‘cake of the year’. Or stop by Corvin Club on a summer evening and curl up together during one of their rooftop movie nights. Here in winter? Did we mention that Budapest is home to Europe’s largest ice skating rink? History and culture buffs It’s not like Hungary is short on history. The city was originally two cities - Buda and Pest (aha! we hear you all collectively saying) and only merged in 1871. But, through its long history, the predecessor cities have found themselves at one time or another occupied by the Ottomans, the Austrian Habsburgs, the Germans and most recently, the Soviets, whose imported Communism is responsible some of the city’s blander Socialist architecture. The National History Museum and the Hungarian National Gallery do a good job of charting the city’s early years, whereas the emotional and evocative Terror House tell the story of some of Budapest’s darkest hours. There are also a number of free walking tours if you want to see the sights and take in the history on the move. So, come one, come all, soak in the atmosphere of this amazing city, then go home and make your friends jealous so they want to come as well!
