The Ultimate Budapest Sugar Rush

Everyone gets a craving for something sweet once in awhile, more so when you’re suffering from a hangover or know that you’re going to party that night. If your sweet tooth is getting the best of you, Budapest is the perfect place to be. The city is filled with adorable little shops selling everything from milkshakes to donuts to macaroons. Most seem too beautiful to eat, but don’t let that stop you! So here are our top picks for the cutest and sweetest places to treat yo’ self.

SUGAR

Sugar Shop

For starters, Sugar is in a prime location - near all of the main Ruin Bars. Perfect if you’re looking to get dessert before heading out.  If you’ve ever wished to visit Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, then this is the place for you.  All the cake’s look like something out of a dream: colorful, glazed, themed to perfection and extreme. Get cupcakes that look like planets or unicorn birthday cakes! The possibilities are endless. If you’re just popping in, the milkshakes and coffees are delicious and can be prepared to go. The upstairs section has plenty of seating if you’re with a big group and need a break. PRO TIP: the toilets are a must see: there is a roller coaster painting and custom made decorations. When cakes are too much for you you can buy candy in bulk or quirky gifts like crazy coffee cups, pillows, funny glasses for your stag party, birthday masks...

SWEETHEART-Waffle & Shake Bar

Sweet Heart - Waffle & Shake Bar

This almost hidden shop is right between Kazinczy Street and Síp Street in the Jewish quarter. When you step inside you feel like you’re at home. It’s small but very cozy and looks like a perfect living room decorated by doing Pinterest DIY’s.  If you’ve had a long day of touring Budapest’s city centre, head here for both sweet and savory waffles.  But the main attraction are definitely the milkshakes. The shakes are piled high with ice cream, sprinkles, chocolate, fruit, pretzels and loads of things, making it incredibly huge and picture-worthy. Both the waffles and milkshakes are very filling, but perfect to fill up on before going on a bar crawl or boat party!

THE SWEET BY VINTAGE GARDEN

The Sweet

Are ice cream, cakes, coffee and macarons are your thing? Then The Sweet is for you. All of their products are decorated to perfection - including gift boxes and to-go cups! Cookies are made daily and are themed to the current season or holiday.  Macaroons can be found in a dozen flavors and in the summer the ice cream is out of this world. Inside is super pretty and delicate but a bit small, so I recommend to get a few things and take walk around the neighborhood. If you’re visiting Budapest for a Hen Party and want to surprise your bride-to-be, make sure to ask about their custom-made cakes!

THE DONUT LIBRARY

The Donut Library

Donuts, coffee and a super cozy atmosphere...what more could you want? Unlike other places in Budapest, coffees come in huge mugs so you can sip them for a long time while you study or plan which clubs to go to later on a night out. It’s impossible to resist the charming and wonderful donuts that line the walls. All the ingredients are 100% natural, which makes them even harder to resist! PRO TIP: In the summer order an iced coffee and get a mini donut placed on top!

FANKI DONUTS

Fanki Donuts

Don’t know where to go when you’re hungover and need some sugar? The Fanki Donut shop is the answer. This small shop is very cheap and has super friendly staff. The donuts here are a bit more simple but are filled with amazing jams and creams. The store is right off of Kiraly Utca, conveniently located near to tons of bars and restaurants and close to the famous opera house.

Bars for the brave and artistic can be found where you can get yourself some new ink, listen to hardcore music and have a drink after. Or for the lighter hearted; order yourself a cafe latte with a Hedgehog on the side to play with. (Yep, we have that too).

When articles about Budapest pop up in the press, or photos of the city appear on Instagram, it’s usually to document the relaxed lifestyle of young locals and the debauched antics of its stag-happy tourists. For sure the city is great for those in their 20s, but it also has a lot to offer older travelers, loved-up couples, and history and culture mavens. We’re proud to say that Budapest truly is a city for anyone and everyone, so come see it for yourself.
